What is an IEP?

IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. All public school students who receive special education services must have an IEP. Making an effective IEP is a team project: Parents, teachers, other special education staff, and students with special needs work together to create a program addressing the student’s unique educational needs. An IEP is a detailed document about the student and their educational program. The law requires that it contain certain information including current performance, annual goals, participation (or not) in achievement tests, transition service needs, and much more.

What is a 504 Plan?

A 504 Plan is developed to identify a student with disabilities and ensure that the student receives any and all necessary accommodations so they can succeed academically. 504 Plans are used when a student’s disability has a significant impact on their life, but they don’t necessarily require special education services.
