Latin One introduces students to the Cornelius family, a typical upper class Roman family. Students will learn about the members of a Roman family, dress, slavery and life in Rome. Grammatically, students will learn declensions, conjugations, and other parts of Latin sentences. Students will learn to translate basic Latin sentences and become familiar with authentic Latin phrases and mottoes, mythological Olympians and legends, and study the Roman Monarchy and early Republic. This is a high school level course.

Learning Targets

  1. Reading – Students will understand selected written materials on various topics.
  2. Writing – Students will respond to statements or questions in Latin; translate selections from English to Latin and Latin to English, showing an understanding of accurate grammatical structures.
  3. Culture – Students will explain how aspects of the Roman world differ from their own, recognize the Roman contributions to the modern world and utilize English derivatives from Latin.
