The transition from Grade 1 to Grade 2 is quite substantial.  In this phase of the student’s learning we expect them to actually comprehend the relationships between characters in a story, be able to decipher basic words, and the big thing is we want them to learn to utilize the information they have already have.

Learning Targets

The biggest jump here is to have the students focus on the concepts around “who, what, when, where, and how.”  Students should be able to read fables, determine their morals, and be able to identify different points of view.  Students should be able to follow and accurately summarize different character conversations, learn basic foreshadowing, and continue to learn new vocabulary.  In grade two vowels, their sounds, and how they are incorporated into words are essential topics as well.
