Now that we have covered some of the benefits of taking world language courses while in high school, let’s dive into some of the common questions students have regarding these courses.

Do You Need a World Language to Graduate High School?

The number of world language credits needed to graduate high school depends on your school district’s graduation requirements. According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the state superintendent shall encourage school boards to require 8.5 credits from any combination of vocational education, world languages, fine arts, and other courses. In Wisconsin, high schools are required to offer world language courses to their students. To find out how many world language credits you need to graduate high school, you should refer to your school district’s policy.

High schools typically require elective credits in order to graduate, which gives you the freedom to select courses you find intriguing. The world language courses offered at eAchieve Academy count as elective credits. Choosing world language courses as an elective is an excellent way to prepare for college and build on important life skills in our increasingly global society.

Do Colleges Require World Language in High School?

Most competitive colleges require taking world language in high school. Successful applicants to colleges such as UW-Madison, Princeton and Stanford have taken three or more sequential units of a world language. While other colleges may not have this requirement, they often look for students who challenge themselves, are curious and empathetic, and who will make good classmates, team members and leaders. Passing world language courses while in high school can prove that you care about other cultures and help your college application stand out from the competition.
