A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can throw a wrench into any student’s education. While mild brain injuries like a concussion are only a temporary obstacle that may require a few days off from school, more serious injuries can make attending school difficult, if not impossible.
If you and your child are dealing with the aftermath of a serious traumatic brain injury, one of the biggest question marks staring you down is how your child will continue his or her education. Although bricks and mortar schools make a good faith effort to accommodate special needs students, the school environment itself presents difficulties, both physically and socially, for students with traumatic brain injuries. How eAchieve Academy helps students with traumatic brain injuries
eAchieve Academy has a full time special education staff committed to helping special needs students of all types reach their full potential. Our special ed staff collaborates and communicates with eAchieve teachers to ensure all our special needs students get an education tailored to their individual needs—whether those are clearly defined in an IEP or identified through a collaborative effort with our special education staff.
One of the biggest difficulties students with TBI face is needing more time to complete course work. Often, the repercussions of a TBI also necessitate extra, or longer, breaks than the conventional school day allows. The flexibility afforded by online learning allows special needs students to work at their own pace and take breaks whenever they want—and for as long as they need. Simply put, special needs students learn better when they’re not under the time constraints of the conventional school day.
For students whose TBI has resulted in a need for assistive technology, or the use of a walker or wheelchair, having the freedom to learn in their own home instead of struggling to get from one classroom to another is immensely appealing. eAchieve Academy makes this possible. All eAchieve students are provided with a personalized lesson plan, which includes daily task assignments. Our instructors identify each student’s needs and plan coursework to help them overcome their weaknesses and build on their strengths.
eAchieve Academy realizes that social learning plays a significant role in both education and the development of social skills. You might think online learners would be more prone to feeling isolated and lonely, but even though eAchieve learners don’t have in-person contact with fellow students they are in frequent contact through online chats, emails and phone calls. All classes also offer an optional weekly eSession, where students and their teacher can interact during a live class session.
For most special needs students, particularly those dealing with social skills problems or assistive technologies, interacting virtually is actually more conducive to developing or rebuilding social skills than in-person interactions. eAchieve also offers social connection events that afford our students to meet up in person and participate in extracurricular activities.
504 Plan or an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?
If your child’s traumatic brain injury has profoundly affected his ability to function in school, he may need to be legally classified as in need of special education before appropriate action can be taken.
There are two types of plans for special education students: a 504 Plan and the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Both these plans lay out a detailed plan for educating special needs students. Both are federally mandated and both provide for special needs students to receive a free and appropriate education, but they serve different purposes.
An IEP is for students who have an identified disability that impedes learning to the point that the child needs specialized instruction in order to close the gap between his academic achievement and that of his peers.
A 504 Plan is for students who have a disability, have a record of a disability, or are treated as having a disability, but do not qualify for special education services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

All students need a support network, but special needs students need one even more. eAchieve Academy understands the vital role parents and friends play in a student’s success, particularly those students dealing with traumatic brain injuries. Our special education staff and instructors make a concerted effort to keep parents informed of their student’s progress and make suggestions to help keep their student on track. eAchieve Academy is free for all K-12 students in Wisconsin
Because eAchieve is a virtual public charter school operating out of Waukesha, Wisconsin, any student in the state can enroll and attend free of charge. We provide all students with a free laptop (theirs to keep after the first year), and parents receive a $60 stipend for their internet access fees after each successful semester.
