Earth Science


In the first semester, students will explore the composition and dynamics of the solid earth. Specific attention will be given to models of the earth, mapping and coordinate systems, composition of matter, minerals, rock formation and the rock cycle, geologic and fossil records supporting geologic time scales, interior structure, plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

In the second semester, students will explore weathering and erosion, fresh water, ground water, glaciers, ocean movement and oceanography, structure and characteristics of the atmosphere, energy flow in the atmosphere, weather and forecasting, determination and change in world climates, the moon and sun, the solar system, and structures in the universe.

Students will encounter the topics covered through print, audio, and video online sources, doing research, performing lab exercises, and exchanging ideas in discussion boards. Students will be assessed on both the level of their knowledge of the concepts presented and their ability to apply those concepts to real world situations.
