Pros and Cons of Online K-12 School

An Honest Look at the Pros and Cons of Online K12 School

Online K-12 classes >> Pros and cons of online school

The most common criticisms of learning at an online school come from fears about:

  • Accreditation
  • Legitimacy of degrees
  • Cost of tuition
  • Lack of student-teacher interactionPros and Cons of Online K-12 School

eAchieve Academy has done away with all of these fears. As an online charter school based out of the Waukesha public school system, eAchieve Academy is tuition-free, fully accredited as a public school and we employ a full staff of Wisconsin state-certified teachers.

Online learning is a great option for many students. However, there are very real considerations to keep in mind before enrolling in online classes. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider before enrolling in online K-12 school.

Pros of online K12 school:

1. More opportunities for self-directed learning.

In addition to our core classes in major subjects like math, science, English, social studies, and on and on, eAchieve Academy offers AP classes, electives and honors courses. eAchieve students get to take advantage of our broad curriculum to explore their own interests and pursue subjects that they care about. Many of eAchieve Academy’s students are part-time students who only take one or two courses they don’t have access to in their brick-and-mortar schools.

2. Fewer distractions, less drama.

Brick-and-mortar schools can be a great source of social interaction for students, but they can also cause distractions that negatively affect a student’s academic success. Social pressures and drama can divert students’ attention away from their studies and cause stress on their grades. Students enrolled at eAchieve Academy choose their own social circles through extracurriculars and activities they decide to involve themselves with.

3. Freedom to learn on your own schedule.

For some students regular attendance at a brick-and-mortar school is just not an option. Whether because of hectic extracurricular circumstances, careers or unpredictable life circumstances, some students require more freedom and flexibility in their schooling. eAchieve Academy’s flexible curriculum is perfect for students who need school to work around their lives rather than the other way around. Many students find a self-paced curriculum is not only better for their schedules, but they perform better academically as well.

Cons of online K-12 school:

1. The family has to be deeply involved every step of the way.

Learning online places the burden of responsibility on students for their own success, but having a student learning from home creates a home dynamic that families must adjust to. Especially with younger students, it is important for families to ensure that their home is a supportive and distraction-free environment.

2. Students have to make friends outside of school.

Public school can be a stressful social environment, but for many students friendships are formed there that last for the duration of their K-12 education. Students enrolled in eAchieve Academy will have little face-to-face interaction on a day to day basis. However a flexible online curriculum frees up students to pursue extracurricular with their peers. eAchieve does offer opportunities to connect with other students, but students will be largely responsible for finding their own social circles and friends.

3. Students have to learn outside the familiarity of a classroom.

Some students learn best in a classroom with social opportunities and academic help from fellow students and an instructor available to answer questions directly. For these students a self-directed online learning format may prove challenging. Other students thrive in the anxiety reducing anonymity of an online classroom.

Students get out what they put in

Online schooling through eAchieve Academy can seem like a foreign and unconventional approach to schooling. We believe that the cons we listed above are merely different approaches to schooling that work better for some students. Online school is a great match for self-motivated students who aren’t afraid to take control of their own educations.
