What’s the best foreign language to learn in high school?

The answer will be different for each student, but there are some guidelines to choosing the best foreign language course for your high school career and beyond. First and foremost, if you’re drawn to a particular foreign language, follow your instincts. If you’re naturally interested you’ll find studying it easier and more enjoyable. Another thing to consider is how useful the language could be for future jobs.

If you have a career path in mind already, do some research and find out what foreign languages are most in-demand in that field. Where you want to work is important too, so consider the popularity of different languages in the region you plan to live in. If travel abroad is one of your goals, you might want to pick a widespread language like Spanish, which is the official language of over 20 countries!

How many years of foreign language are required to graduate high school?

In Wisconsin you aren’t required to take a foreign language to graduate high school. However most college admissions require at least 2 years of high school foreign language classes. Even if you are planning on applying to a college that doesn’t have a high school foreign language requirement, you might want to take world language courses anyway – if you do well, you may be able to test out of your chosen university’s foreign language requirement.

You need 6.5 elective credits to graduate high school in Wisconsin, and foreign language courses count towards that total.
