AP Prep English 9
Description:
AP Prep English 9 is a full year course. This course is designed for students that have demonstrated an aptitude for literary analysis or whom have shown great interest and skill in reading, writing, and communication. During the first semester, students learn about the various forms and purposes of writing, with a focus on introducing writing/communication skills and learning how to analyze a piece of fiction. Throughout the first semester, students are are introduced to the study of short fiction and the novel. All literature read comes from the provided online textbook; however, students may choose to acquire their own copy of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" (also available online). Second semester introduces students to three more aspects of literature: the nonfiction essay, drama, and poetry. Students read and analyze Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Students further hone their research and analytical skills during second semester. In the AP track, students must complete an additional project each semester. First semester Pre AP students independently read a novel ("Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens) and write a formal literary analysis essay. Second semester Pre AP students independently read another book ("The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain) and give a Thematic Analysis Speech relating to the book.
