AP Prep English 10

Description:

This year-long required course covers literature through the use of several reading pieces. Students will learn how to read and respond to literature using a variety of writing styles. In addition, students will learn about literary elements and how those elements are present within the writing pieces.

Semester 1 will cover the following:

  • Unit I: The Short Story (students will focus on how the setting and mood of a story help develop the plot)
  • Unit II: Drama (students will read the Greek tragedy Antigone, by Sophocles)
  • Unit III: Novella; (students will read The Old Man and The Sea, by Ernest Hemingway).

Semester II will cover the following: 

  • Unit I: Independent Novel Selection; (students will pick and read a book of their choice),
  • Unit II: Nonfiction (students will read a variety of nonfiction to understand the human experience)
  • Unit III: Poetry (students will read and write a variety of poems)
  • Unit IV: Drama (students will read the French play, Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand). 

In addition, students will be reading independently and establishing reading goals and recording reading minutes weekly.  AP Prep students will also read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson and Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer.

Learning Targets:

Learning Targets are statements of intended learning based on the National Common Core Standards. Students should review the learning targets and refer to them throughout the school year. By the end of the school year, students should achieve mastery of each target below.

T1 = Communication Target: Students can effectively communicate for a variety of purposes to a variety of audiences. (writing, speaking, digital media)

T2 = Reading Target: Students can comprehend and evaluate both fiction and nonfiction texts.

T3 = Language Target: Students can use a wide variety of words effectively, including general vocabulary and specific literary terms, and adhere to the standard rules of English grammar when communicating.

T4 = Research & Inquiry Target: Students can conduct research for a variety of purposes (evaluating sources for validity and appropriateness), and provide accurate citations.
