English Language Arts
At this point basic reading skills are expected to be at a relatively high level. Attention should now be divided between both using reading, writing, and verbal skills, and basic skillset development. Vocabulary and reading level should be advanced mostly on personal study and external development rather than relying on only school developed curriculum. In other words, more emphasis is placed on the necessity of outside of the classroom study with eAchieve Academy.
At this level we want the students to be able to do more with the text they have read. Rather than refer to specific sections or passage, by the end of the coursework they should be able to use or at least paraphrase exact quotes from the text. It should be used as evidence to demonstrate a particular point of view; either the students or the narrator of the story. Students should be able to accurately summarize the text without getting off course. It should be efficient, coherent, and to the point. We want students to be able to use revision, proofreading, and other steps in the process to create more polished written works.
The majority of the actual coursework at this level is focused on fractions and their various functions. The goal is to gain a solid foundation of fractions, how they operate, and decimal to fraction conversion. It is essential in this phase our students have an improving grasp of fractions as this is one of the most essential principles for all forms of mathematics. Future comprehension of basic mathematics and algebra is extremely difficult without a solid foundation. eAchieve Academy is able to provide our students with the background knowledge they need to be successful in their future education with or outside of eAchieve.
In relation to the high intensity focus on fractions, we want for students to have a solid grasp on how to add and subtract fractions of different denominators. This includes how to convert basic fractions to common denominators as well. While this should be second nature we also want to develop a basic understanding of how to multiply and divide fractions as well. Though, more advanced fraction multiplication and division will be learned in grade six it is necessary to at least establish the groundwork. It will make things in future grade levels go much smoother. In addition students should be drilled on the relationships between decimals and fractions. Also, the basic concepts of volume are introduced as well (though we don’t go into any algebraic functions quite yet.)
Health and Physical Education
In line with the standards set by the state of Wisconsin, eAchieve Academy’s fifth grade health and physical education coursework will challenge students to build their communication and fitness skills to better suit a healthy future.
eAchieve Academy’s focus for this year of physical education is to motivate students to choose to be physically active. Students will learn how to identify physical and psychological benefits resulting from maintaining a physically active lifestyle. Although exercising is important, students will also be taught the importance of monitoring themselves during workouts by using pedometers to help measure the distance they’ve traveled or steps they’ve taken during an activity. Goal setting will also be a main focus in this year of physical education, pushing students to view prolonged physical activity as an achievement and not a chore. Students will also learn the necessary communication skills they need to prevent, resolve, and reduce health risks both during and out of their physical activities. Learning refusal skills to help avoid health risks will also be taught during discussions regarding nonviolent strategies to manage conflict.
Technology, Business, and Information Literacy
eAchieve follows the state of Wisconsin’s model academic standards when it plans its online courses. Our fifth grade students’ technology, business, and information literacy education builds off their past years of learning, continuing to improve communication and evaluation skills.
In fifth grade, eAchieve students will practice reviewing each other’s work, learning how to appropriately judge products, presentations, and the processes of their classmates. Students will learn how to determine if information presented in various forms meets the needs based on the criteria of an audience or assignment while communicating suggestions on how the process or product can be improved. The implementation of personal and jobsite safety rules used to maintain and improve safety or health will be used to help teach students structure and discipline. Students will evaluate the effects of diversity in the community and world and will take time to explain how events in one part of the world may affects other nations, communities, and individuals from other parts of the globe. Continuing with a focus on people, fifth grade students will learn to explain how diverse groups can work together to overcome crises from local to global stages. Students will take what they’ve learned to work in groups with a variety of settings and contexts to develop innovative solutions and to demonstrate knowledge of a development process.
Art and Design
At the end of their elementary education, fifth grade students have gathered a vast array of knowledge regarding art and design education at eAchieve Academy. In line with standards set by the state of Wisconsin, our students will work on culminating years of lessons to complete their elementary level understanding of art.
Our fifth grade students will learn more appropriate art vocabulary and will explore how artists through cultures and history have used art to communicate about their world. Students will work on recognizing form, function, and meaning in art and design as expressive qualities. Beyond this, our students will be taught about different works of art and designs and the elements and principles existing in them. Students will develop an understanding of what makes a quality design and will learn how to communicate complex ideas through drawings, paintings, etc. Learning how to make informed judgements regarding media and television will be another major focus this year. When it comes down to it, fifth graders will leave eAchieve Academy knowing how to find the meanings behind an artwork or design.
At the end of their elementary education, fifth grade students will be at the same level of the state of Wisconsin based on standards eAchieve’s environmental education is based around. Our science courses will leave students with the knowledge they need to be successful in the next step of their education.
eAchieve’s fifth grade students will be taught how to identify environmental questions answerable through the resources and equipment they have available. Students will learn how to collect the information they need for these possible investigations through experiments they can conduct in order to find their solutions. It is at this point in their education our students will learn what natural resources are available and, of them, if they are renewable or non-renewable. Students will study the impact beliefs, attitudes, and values can have on environmental issues and how monitoring techniques can give them the data they need to find their solutions. The consequences of environmental decisions will be studied alongside the advantages/disadvantages of short-term/long-term solutions to problems existing in the real world. By the end of the year, our students should be able to assess their own lives and be able to build their own plan to help reduce their negative impact on the environment.
With our coursework structured around standards set by the state of Wisconsin, our fifth grade students will be reaching the pinnacle of their music education in elementary school. This final year, students in eAchieve Academy will develop their teamwork and communication skills through our music lesson plans.
During their final year in elementary school, our students will practice singing accurately and with good breath control through their singing ranges, both independently and in groups. Students will focus on improvisation as well, working on simple harmonic arrangements with their classmates and by themselves. Reading whole, half, sixteenth notes and rests in different meter signatures will also be practiced alongside learning how to describe specific musical events while listening to pieces. At the end of their fifth grade year, students should be able to describe specific characteristics of different music styles in genres across times and cultures.
