English Language Arts
As the child’s brain begins to develop, and reading comprehension starts to take off, eAchieve Academy courses from this point on are intended to guide students into more independent reading practices. We want to make a shift from simple “right and wrong” answers to having students ask “why?” What we want is to start digging the foundation for basic argument creation and support for our Wisconsin students. This is the level of English Language Arts where students’ individual learning levels begin to differentiate themselves. When we move away from a strictly group (or rather, TOWARDS an individual) atmosphere for some students reading comprehension and the formulation of ideas comes naturally, for others it is a learnable skill, and a select few experience great difficulties. Curricula and standards are set with this in mind so don’t fret. Different children simply learn and develop at different rates than others, and this is completely normal.
By the end of third grade reading courses students should be able to not only form their own conclusions when asked a question about the text, but they should do it with almost no guidance and be able to use specific examples from the reading to explain why they chose the answer they did. At this level we also want to introduce the children into creating their own written composition. This includes writing the three major types of basic essays: narrative, informative, and persuasive. We want leap into more complex grammar, expand the pupil’s vocabulary, and start the teaching of basic research techniques. Technology included in the language arts section may include HIGHLY monitored internet search engines and intro to keyboarding skills.
Just like with reading and writing the leap in mathematics is rather extensive as well. For some eAchieve students, physical representations are still the standard, however, in order to effectively progress students must grasp how to mentally visualize what mathematical functions represent. By the end of this course level we want for mathematical process to be able to come automatically, and most importantly the ability to appropriately use mathematics as a practical tool should strengthen even more.
The introduction of division and multiplication are introduced at this level. Also fractions, as well as basic same denominator addition/subtraction is represented as well. Many student’s face problems with fractions, as the idea of using only “parts” of numbers can be extremely daunting. Students should also learn what these new division and multiplication equations mean. For example, we want them to be able to identify “4 x 7” as “7 groups of 4” or “7 groups of seven equaling 28 in total”. This sounds menial, but it is important for basic algebraic understanding later on down the road.
Health and Physical Education
In third grade, our students will work on refining their skill development in accordance with state standards set by Wisconsin. eAchieve’s coursework for third grade students covers physical and health education so our students can receive the knowledge necessary to lead successful lives.
In third grade, students will mainly be focusing on developing “mature forms” when exercising. This includes learning how to jump and land, throw overhand, and catch fly balls using the correct practice so they can optimize the positive impacts on their body and decrease the risk of harm. Students will also be taught how to properly strike different objects using their hands or feet, these objects include the usual volleyball, baseball, soccer ball, etc. Movement, sport, and leisure skills will be used in combination to perform well in team sports, including dribbling, passing, jump rope, and other similar activities. Outside of their physical education, third grade students will also learn how to describe the relationships between the environment, healthy behaviors, and personal health. Various types of health (emotional, social, occupational, etc.) will be reviewed and discussed by students as well.
Technology, Business, and Information Literacy
eAchieve Academy puts a focus on students when it comes to their technology, business, and information literacy. Third grade students will be taught in compliance with Wisconsin state’s standards, all while being encouraged to think about, practice, and develop their professional behavior in the classroom.
Third grade students in eAchieve will continue to build their technology, business, and information literacy with learning how to record and organize their own information. Taking notes in their own words, recording sources of information, and recognizing the need to identify the author of any information copied will be taught and practiced in our online classrooms. The importance of arranging notes to help answer any problem or question will be emphasized and simple outlining techniques will be taught to help with this process. Students will learn how to list basic bibliographic sources for information used and positive work behaviors and personal qualities will be assessed for self-reflection and improvement when considering marketability in the work force. Developing positive relationships with others will be encouraged with our third grade students while they study interdependency among natural and human-built systems, including social, ecological, and economic health conditions.
Art and Design
Art and design education is important as it gives students the confidence they need to express themselves creatively. In line with standards set by the state of Wisconsin, eAchieve Academy offers art and design courses focused on teaching students about the value and importance of creative thinking.
When it comes to our lesson plans, our students will be immersed into the world of art and design to receive a well-rounded education encouraging creative and emotional development. In third grade, patterns and colors in nature will be studied with drawing used to examine objects closely. Students will learn how to show differences among colors, textures, and shapes in their artwork while creating 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional pieces of art. Students will be taught how to read simple maps, charts, and plans along with learning how artists make their work. Art will be used to help students understand their own feelings or how it can make them feel. Students will talk or write about these feelings to recognize their own emotional reactions to art, whether it is made by someone from another time, place, culture, or their own. Visual ideas and objects may also be developed independently or with others to help students fully understand the importance of materials and techniques used in this expressive process. This course will lead our students to having a better understanding of their own ideas, artistic or not, and about the purposes and meanings of art in its different forms.
By third grade, children begin working with larger whole numbers in mathematics and begin discussing reading materials in literature. It is no surprise, with eAchieve Academy’s Wisconsin state standards based learning targets, our students’ environmental education increases in complexity as well.
With three years of basic environmental education behind them, our third grade students will begin to learn about their roles as citizens in their community, including the power, authority, governance, and responsibility they have with the environment. Students will be able to apply ideas of the past, present, and future to specific environmental issues previously identified in past years. People and groups of people involved in environmental issues will be identified along with the decisions and actions related to the problems. Students will work on their communication skills by discussing these issues and attempting to create their own solutions they can do at home.
Identifying, reading, and interpreting different types of music is important for students of all ages and, with eAchieve Academy, our third grade students will be focusing on building those skills. In compliance with the state of Wisconsin standards, our music education is comprehensive and engaging for all of our students.
Our learning targets are structured around standards set by the state, meaning your students will learn everything they need to be successful beyond our online program. In third grade, our students begin to learn how to discuss music by describing various styles representing different cultures. Terminology will also be learned so students can better explain music notation, instruments, performances, and voices in their discussions. Aside from building communication skills, students’ hearing abilities will also be developed as they will be taught to identify the sounds of a different instruments from orchestras and bands. After discussions and listening, students will also learn how to critique their own performances or the performances of their classmates through constructive suggestions.
