English Language Arts
The transition from Grade 1 to Grade 2 is quite substantial. In this phase of the student’s learning we expect them to actually comprehend the relationships between characters in a story, be able to decipher basic words, and the big thing is we want them to learn to utilize the information they have already have.
The biggest jump here is to have the students focus on the concepts around “who, what, when, where, and how.” Students should be able to read fables, determine their morals, and be able to identify different points of view. Students should be able to follow and accurately summarize different character conversations, learn basic foreshadowing, and continue to learn new vocabulary. In grade two vowels, their sounds, and how they are incorporated into words are essential topics as well.
Math at the Grade 2 level is determined to continue from Grade 1, only now we want to introduce the basic concepts of actually using mathematics to solve problems. Course design here is formulated around using reading and interpretation skills to take basic problems and convert them to their simplest mathematical forms.
Quantifiably measurably learning goals include the ability to not only be able to count, but also work with time and money. Also numeric place value of whole numbers should be learned. The key focus here, however, is for the student to be able to use sentence structure, reasoning skills, and problem solving to begin to utilize mathematics as a tool to serve practical purposes. We want to make a transition from the view of math as a simple exercise, to an ultimate tool in effective problem solving. We will continue to work with shapes, but geometry is still considered to be a secondary learning objective at this point.
Health and Physical Education
Although an online alternative for school, health and physical education is still possible through eAchieve Academy. Our second grade students will build confidence and knowledge through our program, utilizing nutritional information and strength building activities to teach students about the importance of safety and perseverance in exercise.
With second grade being one of the most important times in a child’s developmental stages, its important our students learn the basic guidelines they need for living a safe, healthy life. By the end of their time in the second grade program, our students will be able to demonstrate behaviors avoiding or reducing health risks, such as looking both ways before crossing streets or wearing safety gear such as seat belts and helmets when needed. Aside from safety, communication skills will continue to be taught and outlined through our lesson plans, helping our students identify ways to better express their actual needs or wants to family and friends. Beyond only knowing the difference between healthy and unhealthy behaviors, students will practice and learn how to share verbal and non-verbal indicators of enjoyment to understand how to communicate with or without words.
Establishing how to identify role models for healthy habits will be covered in second grade along with the importance of teaching students to lead by example, encouraging their friends and classmates to make healthy choices as well. An expectation of following rules, procedures, and practicing manners while remaining productive and motivated will be followed in our program. The concept of trying new things will also be encouraged along with perseverance in the face of failure or lack of success in locomotor, non-locomotor, or object manipulating activities. eAchieve’s emphasis on safety and confidence building for our second grade students will help prepare them for a healthier, happier future.
Technology, Business, and Information Literacy
With a focus on building a career mentality, eAchieve offers technology, business, and information literacy for second grade students with the purpose of helping children begin to understand how they can use organized systems like the library and internet to aid them in their search for information and resources for both personal and academic purposes.
Technology, business, and information literacy will be continued from grade 1, as students will gain skills for navigating information in libraries and online. It is important for students to be able to tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction resources at this stage in their education. Understanding what websites are trusted and those not be used for academic purposes will also be taught. Students will learn to distinguish between fact and opinion and be able to determine the timeliness and validity of information sources. Aside from written information, students will learn how to recognize the messages conveyed by graphics and images in media. Students will also learn how to apply their academic experiences to the real world in work, inter-relationship, or community situations. Assessing attitudes and skills positively contributing to successful learning will be taught to help students begin to understand how they can use what they’ve learned in their personal and professional lives beyond second grade.
Art and Design
Second grade students are at a point in their life where they need to be learning as much as they can. Creative development cannot be ignored, and with courses matching the standards set by the state of Wisconsin, our students receive the best art and design education possible.
eAchieve Academy’s students will work on their creative communication skills by producing art in forms such as graphic design, landscape, photography, and through popular images and objects. These visual productions will lend application to everyday life, such as sketching, graphing, and planning. Art will be used as an expression of ideas unable to be expressed by words. Mass media, magazines, televisions, and films will be understood as forms of art. Students will learn about the visual messages advertisements and the news contain along with knowing simple media techniques and how to create works of art with meaning.
eAchieve Academy creates its lesson plans based on standards set by the state of Wisconsin, creating legitimate, quality online learning courses for students of all ages. By grade 2, our students will have a base of pervious environmental knowledge they will need to build on, including a more in depth look at ecosystems and natural cycles existing in the world.
By the end of their year in second grade, students will be able to describe ecosystems in Wisconsin, both natural and human-built. Students will also have gained knowledge on the different types of adaptations organisms may make to adjust to their habitat in times of change. Utilizing their drawing skills, our students will be taught how to draw a simple hydrologic cycle to illustrate how water moves in the environment to see the importance of keeping our waters clean. It is around this grade level as well when our students will begin to identify environmental problems and issues needing some sort of resolution or solution.
By second grade, many children will already be using music in their daily life outside of school in various forms. eAchieve Academy’s second grade music coursework focuses on utilizing the musical instincts children will have already been building to improve upon and develop for greater musical understanding and techniques.
Near the end of their second grade year, students will have worked on reading notes and rests in their varied forms, including whole, half, dotted, and eighth. Students will also begin to use a system of numbers and letters to read basic pitch notation in the treble clef and other major keys. Our students will be taught to identify traditional symbols and terms referring to volume and tempo and how to interpret them correctly while performing. It is at this point in their education when our students will learn how to identify similar and different phrases of music.
