English Language Arts
In grade 1 the purpose of eAchieve’s English language arts program is to, in a sense, add as an extension to the material learned at the Kindergarten level. Here, we expect to take an approach involving a greater amount of detail, information recollection, and relationship development. One of the largest differences is for student’s to develop a curiosity and ask more questions without being prompted.
The learning targets identified in Grade 1 are specifically made to build directly on the skills learned in Kindergarten. We want to transition into the basic understanding of how, and why the English language works. Students should learn how to print the entire upper/lowercase alphabet, be able to understand some basic grammatical concepts (ex. The first letter of a sentence is capitalized, and punctuation), and the goal is to have Grade 1 level children able to articulate a narrative with a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end.
The idea with Grade 1 mathematics is to make the slow transition from rudimentary physical representations to mental calculation. We strive to develop a solid foundation at this phase because mathematical principles like place value, addition/subtraction, and more make up the core of what all the student’s math skills are going to build off of.
There are several specific mathematical goals expected to be achieved by children at the Grade 1 level. They should learn how to accurately tell time, be able to count up to 120, measure lengths, and be able to add and subtract all numbers 20 and under. Visual representations can still be used in order to serve as a physical representation.
Health and Physical Education
eAchieve Academy offers one of the best health and physical online education programs in Wisconsin because of our focus on teaching students the proper skills and knowledge they need to successfully progress through life. Our first grade students will continue to build on their decision-making process while beginning to consider setting goals for their own physical and nutritional health while an association between “physical activity” and “fun” is being formed.
Identifying steps in their decision-making process and discussing their decisions with trusted family members or adults is expected to be learned by first grade students in the state of Wisconsin. Communication skills will be improved to meet these standards while students are taught how to provide examples of situations when a health-related decision is needed to keep themselves safe. Knowing how to communicate their ideas will also be enhanced through learning about the concept of setting a health goal. Analyzing the steps of achieving a goal will be taught to continue the process of learning how to critically think.
Health practices and behaviors will be considered with the implementation of proper hygiene, physical activity, and nutritional eating lessons into our plans. eAchieve students will learn about the short-term effects of physical activity on the heart, lungs, and muscles to better understand how appropriate practice leads to improved performance. Outside of gaining this knowledge, our first grade program will highlight the importance of engaging in physical activities for health benefits and how to continue having fun while doing so. Locomotion, non-locomotion, and manipulation of objects are covered in our plans, but because of their incorporation through games and activities, our students will be able to learn how to properly exercise without being bored or feeling negative about these practices. By the end of the first grade program, our students will be able to engage in a series of physical activities for increasingly longer periods of time without feeling as fatigued as they might at the beginning of the program.
Technology, Business, and Information Literacy
In accordance with standards set by the state of Wisconsin, eAchieve Academy offers a well-rounded online education alternative for first graders giving them the opportunity to learn their technology, business, and information literacy skills from home. Encouraging problem solving and teamwork development, first grade students will continue to enhance their critical thinking skills.
Our students are growing up in a world dominated by information. It’s important they learn to locate and access information sources, including how to recognize materials in a library and understanding their systematical organization. Using the classification system of a library, students will learn how to identify and use printed or electronic sources of information for their educational benefit or personal interest. Students will learn how to use keywords, authors, titles, and topics to find the resources they’re looking for. These lessons will branch out into using the internet, encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, and indexes correctly. Aside from learning how to sort through information, first grade students will also work collaboratively with others using interpersonal skills to resolve any possible conflicts while being able to identify the strengths, aptitudes, and passions of both their similar and diverse team members.
Art and Design
First grade students at eAhieve Academy must continue to understand the value of communicating ideas through art. In accordance with standards set by the state of Wisconsin, our first grade art and design program uses observational exercises to improve our students’ expressive and creative thinking.
The learning targets designed by the state of Wisconsin for grade 1 are fully implemented into our lesson plans. Our students will be taught to understand how the design of art changes its overall meaning and can improve its appearance. Students will also be asked to look at nature and other works of natural and man-made art as visual resources as their own information to draw from in the future. Sketching will be practiced as an effort to help children develop ideas for their art before they begin to develop basic skills to produce quality artwork. The natural characteristics and limitations of materials used for artwork will be studied alongside being aware of one’s own creative process to help students better understand their own work. Personal responsibility will be established for students’ own learning and creative processes. Our students will also be taught about the basic history of public art, artists, designers, critics, and architecture of their own cultural community. Students will also gain an understanding of the environment surrounding a piece of art, whether it be natural or man-made, heavily influences a design. The basic language used in art will be taught, including the familiarization of words such as “originality” and “symmetry” being inducted into our students’ vocabulary. Problem solving skills will also be developed through the promotion of fluency, flexibility, and elaboration in students’ artworks.
By first grade, our students are more aware of their world than before and need to have a better understanding of how the world works. With our lesson plans in line with standards set by the state of Wisconsin, eAchieve Academy will give first grade students the knowledge they need to correctly see the environment.
Students will be taught about the flow of energy in natural cities, with the sun being the main source of energy on Earth. Utilizing some of their art skills they’ll be learning at the same time, students will learn how to illustrate the energy they use in their daily lives. Students will also gain enough knowledge to be able to list sources of renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy existing in the world. Along with this list, students will be able to name components of an ecosystem, including the aspects of a healthy habitat.
Music is one of the most important educational courses a student can take, as it exercises both artistic and logical thinking. With eAchieve, Wisconsin state standards are used to structure our lesson plans, guaranteeing a well-rounded, fulfilling learning experience for our first grade students.
By the end of their time in first grade, our students will have started working on echoing short rhythmic and melodic patterns to build their techniques. Group work will conducted to teach students how to sing or play with matching dynamic levels and how to respond to cues by a leader. Aside from working in a group, students will practice independent parts, contrasting or complimenting with parts other students have. Students will also begin to work on improvisation to create simple rhythms or melodies with the potential to build short songs or instrumental pieces.
