## Language Arts

Description

By the end of the fourth grade the fundamentals of reading, writing, and language comprehension should be firmly grasped in preparation for some of the more in depth language arts skills learned in the upcoming levels. eAchieve Academy begins to move away from standard vocabulary and comprehension drills with the hope students now possess the tools necessary to expand these areas on their own through external reading and interpretation of their usual course work.

Learning Targets

In both the reading and writing sectors of language arts we want for students to move away from “standardized” formats.  For example instead of using pre supplied transition words (first, second, last, also) children at this level should be encouraged to use their own specific language to write for two reasons.  One, it is imperative the students do not become too dependent on writing using one format, and one format only.  The writing process becomes a “fill in the blank” process at this point.  Also, this let’s children who are at more advanced levels really break off and experiment with their creativity.   In addition students should be able to refer to, and interpret information presented them verbally, in graphs, or other diagrams.

## Mathematics

Description

Mathematics in grade four serves as another “branch out” level of basic concepts.  Most concepts have already been acquired in some form, but at this level curriculum is constructed around advancing said sills.  It is important to note, during this stage, students will start to learn the basics of more advance geometry with eAchieve Academy.

Learning Targets

One completely new concept the students are expected to learn by the completion of this level is they should be able to identify and draw the three basic types of angles.  They also should be able to correctly use appropriate instruments to determine the measurement of the angles in question.  All four operations should now be used, sometimes in combination with one another, to solve mathematical problems.  Decimal notation for basic fractions, factors, and multiples should be made comfortable topics as well.

## Health and Physical Education

Description

By the end of fourth grade, eAchieve students will have gained a familiarity with exercise and health so these topics feel discussible. Building on communication skills, our learning targets are built around standards set by the state of Wisconsin so our students are able to move forward in their physical and health education at the same level of other students in the state.

Learning Targets

During this year, students will begin to learn how to explain the importance of warming up to prepare the body for any type of physical activity. Students will be taught how to locate and use heart rates to monitor their body’s reaction to exercise. The impact of external and internal factors on health behaviors will be a topic for students to discuss as well as how personal values, beliefs, and emotions can affect health behaviors as well.

## Technology, Business, and Information Literacy

Description

In line with the state of Wisconsin’s education standards, fourth grade students will be taught how to interpret and use information to solve problems and answer class questions. Identifying new information and learning how to integrate it with previous knowledge will give eAchieve students the skills they need to help develop their critical thinking.

Learning Targets

Building on these critical thinking skills, students will learn how to determine if information is relevant to the question being asked. Knowing how to select the right information and applying the information gathered in an effective way will be learned by the end of a student’s time spent in our program. Students will be expected to communicate their research results in an appropriate format and will practicing distinguishing between informative, entertainment, and persuasive presentations in the three types of communication modes: written, oral, and visual. Our fourth grade students will work with different presentation formats, including speech, video, and hypermedia while developing a product to communicate the results of their research. Engaging in systems thinking and inquiry processes, students will learn how to identify problems while analyzing the decisions they’re making as they try to develop social, economic, and ecological solutions also capable of meeting the needs of future generations.

## Art and Design

Description

After four previous years of art education, eAchieve Academy’s 4th grade students can really begin to build a better, more complex understanding of art and design. Our lesson plans are built around the standards set by the state of Wisconsin, ensuring our students are gaining the most knowledge they can when it comes to expressive and creative techniques.

Learning Targets

Beginning to understand the role of art criticism and knowledge is one of the most important lessons our students learn during this year of study. Our students will be taught about the different concepts of beauty existing in different cultures around the world. Understanding the different between original, reproduced, and copied artworks will also be learned. It is also at this point in their education when our students will begin to tie art into other areas of learning such as sciences, technology, and social studies.

Students will take time to invent new ways to communicate ideas and solutions to problems in art using what they are learning about life, nature, and people to aid in their creations. A variety of tools, words, numbers, sounds, movements, emotions, and spaces will be used in practice to help students understand and communicate about the world. Students will explore how personal traits, independent thinking, courage, and dedication can all play a role in the creation of personal styles of art.

## The Environment

Description

Wisconsin state standards are used as direct models for eAchieve Academy’s environmental education lesson plans. Focusing on developing communication and reasoning skills, our fourth grade environmental course will challenge our students to critically think and listen.

Learning Targets

eAchieve will teach our students to identify solutions to an environmental issue and take time to discuss arguments for and against the issue, both independently and in groups. These groups will also identify and describe examples of their own, individual environmental civic responsibilities and what they can do to fulfill them. Students will understand how their own actions have the potential to drastically impact their citizenship towards the environment and how dangerous abused power, authority, and governance can be.

## Music

Description

Students in eAchieve Academy’s fourth grade level will have years of musical experience to build on in this more challenging year. Our learning targets are structured around state standards so our students are able to gain the music education necessary to be on the same page as the rest of Wisconsin students.

Learning Targets

In fourth grade, students will learn how to identify ways in which other school subjects are incorporated through music. With this added knowledge, our students will be taught how to behave appropriately for different performances based on their context and style. Students will spend time listening to different genres and styles of music from separate historical periods and cultures in the world to better identify music through time and space. From this, they will work on describing, in simple terms, how the elements of the music they’ve spent time listening to vary between cultures. They will also take time to learn to identify the types of music they experiences in their daily lives and what characteristics make up the music they hear. By the end of fourth grade, our students will have learned how to describe and discuss the importance of the role of music in society and how it has impacted different times and cultures.
